ACTHA North Expo

I want to take this opportunity to share information about an exciting event coming up for condo and townhome owners and associations.  The Association of Condominium, Townhouse and Homeowners Association (ACTHA) will be holding the North Expo on Sat., Sept 8 in Wheeling.  The following link will take you to the event page and show you how to register:

It is a half day event that features a free trade show and 15 minute educational presentations.  ACTHA also offers four seminars in conjunction with the expo and there is a fee for it of $ 30 per person.  I plan to attend this event for the first part of the day and hope you can also!  Please call my office with any additional questions.

Out and About

Last week, I was honored to be invited to join Representative Mike Tryon (R-Crystal Lake) to speak to the Economic Development Council.  EDC is a membership based, all volunteer organization that brings together business leaders and executives from around the Chicago region.

Our topic was “What Happened in Springfield?”  After some opening remarks on the state budget and Medicaid reform, we opened it up for discussion and questions.  As you might imagine, there were a lot of questions about the state’s ongoing fiscal situation as well as pensions and health care for government employees.  Rep. Tryon and I share a lot of similar views on these topics and I think the assembled group was pleasantly surprised to see that there could be bi-partisanship in state government.

It must have been well received because there were some in the room who wanted to schedule a similar luncheon for 2013!

Special Session for August

The House has been called back in to session for one day – Friday August 17.  The purpose is to vote on the recommendation of the House Select Committee on Discipline to expel Representative Derrick Smith from the Illinois House of Representatives.  Rep. Smith was arrested and indicted last spring for taking a $7000 bribe in exchange for a letter of support for a state grant.

Following Rep. Smith’s arrest, I was appointed Chair of the House Special Investigating Committee.  It was the Special Investigating Committee that made the initial determination, by a unanimous vote, to pursue action against Rep. Smith.  While none of us look forward to this.we have a duty to protect and preserve the integrity of the House.  Each of us will be reviewing the evidence and the recommendation of the House Select Committee on Discipline before taking – what will be – historic action.
