A Later Date for the Primary Election

I am the chief sponsor of legislation that would move the current February primary voting date back to March. Many voters I heard from said that the February primary was too early. I think given the experience of the voters and candidates in the February election that it is a good idea to move it back.

Holding our primary election in mid-winter seemed to negatively impact voter turnout and also the ability of a low budget, more grass roots campaign the necessary time to develop momentum.

House Bill 5039, which recently passed out of the House Elections Committee, is now headed to the full House for consideration.  The status of the bill can be tracked on the General Assembly’s website at

Speaking Out on the Budget Crisis

Last Thursday, the House adjourned for the second week in a row around 1 pm.  While it is not unusual to adjourn on a Thursday, I am deeply troubled by the fact that we adjourned so early with no time devoted to addressing our serious fiscal crisis.  I am not prone to making speeches on the House floor, but I felt compelled to do so last Thursday and accused the House of “fiddling while Rome is burning”.  I was subsequently interviewed as to what I said on the floor and a copy of the video is at:

I don’t know that any action will occur as a result, but I want you to know that I cannot abide our lack of attention to the crisis.

Town Hall Meetings

Senator Susan Garrett and I will host two town hall meetings to discuss state and local concerns.  We are excited for this opportunity to meet and talk with residents in our district.  The meetings will take place on:

-Saturday, March 20th 2:00-3:30 @ Des Plaines Public Library: 1501 Ellinwood in Des Plaines, Meeting Room A

-Sunday, March 21st 3:00-4:30 @ Northbrook Village Hall, 1225 Cedar Lane in Northbrook, Board Room.

We hope to see you at one of the meetings!
